Readville Yard 5 Industrial Development
GalleryOffshoots Inc. designed a series of phased landscapes for Yard 5, a new industrial ‘maker’ community in Readville, Boston. A former railyard contaminated with PAHs and metals, the 21-acre site is developing into leasable units for small-scale manufacturers and start-up businesses, serviced by the nearby Readville commuter station. In the productive open spaces designed throughout the site, phytoremediation plant species are utilized to passively mitigate existing soil and groundwater contamination, while addressing air pollution particulate matter that could be generated by truck traffic.
Offshoots’ expertise in phytoremediation strategies as well as the use of sustainable landscape site developement principles drove the site planning process. The design features planted phyto buffer areas, green infrastructure for stormwater cleansing, bike pathways, public open spaces, and semi-private open spaces for employee use.
