From research to practice, phytoremediation strategies continue to grow and have positive impacts on contaminated sites at the 2023 Phytoremediation Conference in Chicago, IL.
In May of 2023, Offshoots’ founder Kate Kennen participated in the 17th International Phytotechnology Conference at Argonne National Laboratory in Chicago, IL with scientists from across the world! The focus of this International Phytotechnology Conference is “to form a collaborative network of international experts in academic research and practical applications in various challenges encountered by the environment.”
This conference included a tour of the landfill site near Mallard Lake in DuPage County, Illinois, an impactful and successful example of phytoremediation plants at work. See our previous post to learn more about this phytoremediation site.
Phytotechnologies harness the power of plants to address environmental challenges. These systems use plants to clean or contain contaminants in soil, sediment, and water by breaking down organic pollutants and extracting heavy metals. Phytotechnologies also play a role in ecosystem restoration, biofuel production, carbon sequestration, air quality improvement, and overall environmental enhancement. Research continues to advance our understanding and optimization of plant capabilities for reducing environmental risks and maximizing benefits.
