Offshoots Inc. is collaborating with Utile and First Highland Management and Development on the Readville 5 Industrial Development, a former railyard contaminated with PAHH and metals. The 21-acre site will be developed into leasable units for small-scale manufacturers and start-up businesses and will be serviced by the nearby Readville commuter station. Special attention is being given to ensure that views, solar orientation, aesthetics, and drainage challenges are accommodated in the design solution. Offshoots is evaluating opportunities to use plants and phytoremediation to passively treat existing contamination.
This project caters to Offshoots’ expertise in employing phytoremediation strategies on brownfield sites, as well as the use of sustainable landscape architecture principles to address site drainage and grading. The design features planted buffer areas, bike pathways, public open spaces, courtyards, building entry spaces and hardscape areas for site amenities.
