Hyannis Mainstreet East

Gallery

The ‘East End’ of Main Street Hyannis serves as an important retail district for Hyannis, and as a gateway to downtown and the harbor area. The new streetscape includes a critical portion of Hyannis’ downtown retail core, and acts as the primary approach to the entire waterfront and downtown area from both the North (Barnstable Road to Center Street- the main approach the Hyannis Business Improvement District sends visitors in from Exit 6) and the West (the Main Street corridor from Rte 28 and Willow St in Yarmouth).

The streetscape is designed to enhance the historical character of the area while connecting the areas transportation hub, the RTA (Regional Transportation Authority), to the harbor and the businesses downtown. The streetscape includes ‘Complete Streets’ amenities to improve travel conditions for bicycles and pedestrians and passive stormwater green infrastructure. Tree and vegetation species selected are native to Cape Cod and salt-tolerant to withstand coastal flooding for improved climate resiliency. Visual interest and cultural harbor history are emphasized alongside environmental history and regional resiliency.
